Manistee County currently has an opening for the full-time position of Administrative Secretary in the County Controller/Administrator’s Office at the Courthouse.  Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and three years progressively more responsible secretarial experience including bookkeeping or general accounting. Must be proficient in the use of computers and a variety of software programs.  Must have dictation skills, good organization and verbal communication skills and be able to handle multiple tasks at the same time. Salary Range $16.71 - $21.47.

85th District Court Civil Clerk


THE 85TH DISTRICT Court for Manistee County is seeking qualified candidates to fill a full-time Civil Clerk position. The Civil Clerk is responsible for processing general civil, small claims, landlord-tenant, and summary proceedings cases. This includes reviewing, processing, and filing all documents related to the case.
This individual must be able to multi-task and assist with a wide variety of responsibilities in a busy office including interaction with public and other office staff. Must have sound clerical skills and be proficient with data entry software and office software such as Microsoft Office, WordPerfect, and Adobe Acrobat. Knowledge of legal terminology and procedures helpful. Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma with two years of practical experience in an office setting or an associate degree in a related field, bachelor’s degree preferred. Must be able to work with a wide variety of people, including people under stress. Professional demeanor required.

Case Manager

Under the direction and supervision of the Chief Public Defender, the Case Manager is assigned to work with clients of the office in need of assistance to address possible barriers he or she may be experiencing, in turn impacting their legal status. Such barriers include social services barriers, such as those with mental illness, emotional disturbance, adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD), poverty, housing issues, unemployment, and individuals who have substance use disorders and/or a serious mental illness with co-occurring substance use disorder. The Case Manager works with the client and his/her chosen support network in connecting clients with treatment and recovery plans that promote individual choice, the use of community resources, and formal and informal supports in pursuit of the individual’s desired future. The Case Manager provides expertise in providing coordination of service needs, linking persons to appropriate service agencies and supports mitigation while operating as a liaison between the public defenders and our clients as well as service providers, stakeholders, and the public.

Regional Public Defender Office Administrator - Benzie Office

Under the direction and supervision of the Chief Public Defender, performs a variety of secretarial and clerical duties to ensure the timely flow of all necessary paperwork to support the operations of the Regional Public Defender’s Office. Types a variety of documents, enters case information into the computer system and performs a variety of related tasks. Aides with the processing of criminal files, which includes reviewing, processing, and filing all documents related to such cases. Communicates daily with a variety of people from divergent backgrounds both verbally and in writing. The position will be open until filled and will be contingent on the continuation of funding.

85th District Court Sobriety Court Peer Recovery Coach


Certified Peer Recovery Coach position open:  The Recovery Coach's goal is to create the best possible chance of recovery for their participant.  This position involves work with participants of the 85th District Sobriety Court (Manistee).  The case load is typically 15 participants.  The Recovery coach position requires weekly check-ins with each participant, leading 1 to 2 hours of a support group weekly and attending bi-weekly team meetings.  Flexible hours, in person and via zoom.   The position is approximately 10 hours per week.  This position requires a CCAR certificate of completion for Recovery Coach Academy training or equivalent, 2 years of complete abstinence and 1 year of previous experience in recovery coaching or closely related field.

85th District Court – Court Recorder / Judicial Secretary / Clerk

THE 85TH DISTRICT Court for Manistee County is seeking qualified candidates to fill a full time Court Recorder / Judicial Secretary / Clerk Position. The majority of this position will be dedicated to recording court proceedings. This position will also fill the role of the Judicial Secretary to the District Court Judge as well as performing certain Clerking duties in the 85th District Court. 

A Certified Electronic Recorder (CER, preferred) or Certified Electronic Operator (CEO) may apply for this position. This individual must be able to multi-task and assist with a wide variety of responsibilities in a busy office and Court room, including interaction with public and other office staff. The Manistee County Sheriff's Office has a vacancy for the position of Deputy Sheriff. Starting wage for this position is $19.30 per hour with benefits.

  • Must be currently licensed/licensable with Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES)
